[3-A] Pranayama and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Prana is the personality layer which is in between the physical body known as Annamaya Kosa and the mental body called Manomaya kosa. According to modern medicine and to yogic wisdom, the disturbances at the mind and subtler levels percolate into the body level, resulting in ailments. According to Yoga texts specifically those problems related to inner psychological sensitivity percolate into the digestive function. IBS and acidity definitely fall into this category. Sensitivity is needed for human development. People progresses to be better human beings because of sensitivity and empathy. This is a welcome development. But when one is so sensitive that everything is taken to heart, or one feels helpless to change, many feelings are unconsciously suppressed. This can lead to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Pranayama techniques such as kapalabhati bhastrika followed by anuloma violma pranayama, followed by meditation can make the necessary internal correction to alleviate IBS by shifting the focus from outside to within. These practices also help develop inner harmony in the body mind consciousness continuum. Sequencing pranayama and meditation for IBS is important, and can be learned from a knowledgeable teacher.
